Leupeptin is a tripeptide consisting of N-acetylleucyl, leucyl, and argininal residues linked by peptide bonds. It inhibits calpains, a family of calcium-activated proteases involved in cell death. It functions as a serine protease inhibitor, bacterial metabolite, cathepsin B inhibitor, calpain inhibitor, and EC 3.4.21.4 (trypsin) inhibitor. It is also a tripeptide, aldehyde, and conjugate base of leupeptin(1+).
