Emodin is a trihydroxyanthraquinone derived from 9,10-anthraquinone, substituted with hydroxy groups at positions 1, 3, and 8, and a methyl group at position 6. Found in the roots and barks of plants such as rhubarb and buckthorn, as well as in moulds and lichens, it is an active component of various Chinese herbs. Emodin functions as a tyrosine kinase inhibitor, antineoplastic agent, laxative, and plant metabolite. It is related to emodin anthrone and is the conjugate acid of emodin(1-).
