Apixaban is a 7-oxo-4,5,6,7-tetrahydro-1H-pyrazolo[3,4-c]pyridine-3-carboxamide substituted at position 1 with a 4-methoxyphenyl group and at position 6 with a 4-(2-oxopiperidin-1-yl)phenyl group. It is used for the prevention and treatment of thromboembolic diseases and functions as an anticoagulant and EC 3.4.21.6 (coagulation factor Xa) inhibitor. It belongs to the classes of pyrazolopyridines, piperidones, lactams, and aromatic ethers.
