Saroglitazar is a monocarboxylic acid, specifically (2S)-2-ethoxy-3-(p-ethoxyphenyl)propanoic acid, in which one methyl hydrogen of the p-ethoxy substituent is replaced by the nitrogen of 2-methyl-5-[4-(methylthio)phenyl]-1H-pyrrole. It is an agonist at PPAR alpha and gamma subtypes, with predominant PPARalpha activity, and is used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes. It functions as a PPARgamma agonist, hypoglycemic agent, and PPARalpha agonist. It belongs to the classes of pyrroles, monocarboxylic acids, methyl sulfides, and aromatic ethers.
