Luteolin is a tetrahydroxyflavone with hydroxy groups at positions 3', 4', 5, and 7. It functions as an antioxidant, free radical scavenger, anti-inflammatory agent, immune system modulator, and cancer inhibitor. It acts as an EC 2.3.1.85 (fatty acid synthase) inhibitor, antineoplastic agent, vascular endothelial growth factor receptor antagonist, plant metabolite, nephroprotective agent, angiogenesis inhibitor, c-Jun N-terminal kinase inhibitor, apoptosis inducer, and immunomodulator. It is a 3'-hydroxyflavonoid and a conjugate acid of luteolin-7-olate.
