Ellagic acid is an organic heterotetracyclic compound formed by the oxidative aromatic coupling and intramolecular lactonisation of gallic acid. Found in fruits and vegetables like raspberries, strawberries, cranberries, and pomegranates, it acts as an antioxidant, food additive, plant metabolite, and inhibitor of multiple enzymes including DNA topoisomerases, tyrosinase, and others. It is also a skin lightening agent, fungal metabolite, and geroprotector. Functionally related to gallic acid, it is a cyclic ketone, lactone, catechol, and polyphenol.
