Azathioprine is a thiopurine and prodrug of 6-mercaptopurine, in which the mercapto hydrogen is replaced by a 1-methyl-4-nitroimidazol-5-yl group. It functions as an immunosuppressant, antineoplastic agent, antimetabolite, DNA synthesis inhibitor, and hepatotoxic agent. It is used to treat inflammatory conditions, post-organ transplantation, Crohn's disease, and multiple sclerosis. It also acts as a C-nitro compound, imidazole, and aryl sulfide. It has carcinogenic properties.
