Carbetocin is a synthetic carba-analogue of oxytocin, in which the hydrogen on the phenolic hydroxy group is replaced by a methyl group, the amino group on the cysteine residue is replaced by hydrogen, and the sulfur of the cysteine residue is replaced by a methylene group. It induces uterine contractions and is used to control postpartum bleeding. It functions as an oxytocic.
