Prostaglandin E2 is prostaglandin F2α with the hydroxy group at position 9 oxidized to a ketone. It is the most common and biologically potent mammalian prostaglandin. It functions as an oxytocic and is a metabolite in both humans and mice. It is the conjugate acid of prostaglandin E2(1-).
