Dobutamine is a catecholamine and secondary amine with the structure 4-(3-aminobutyl)phenol, in which one hydrogen attached to the nitrogen is substituted by a 2-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)ethyl group. It is a beta1-adrenergic receptor agonist that increases cardiac contractility without causing vasoconstriction or tachycardia. Used as the hydrochloride salt, it is employed in the management of acute heart failure as a cardiotonic, sympathomimetic, and beta-adrenergic agonist drug.
