Indoprofen is a monocarboxylic acid derived from propionic acid, with a 4-(1-oxo-1,3-dihydroisoindol-2-yl)phenyl group substituting a hydrogen at position 2. Initially used as an anti-inflammatory and analgesic, it was withdrawn due to severe gastrointestinal bleeding. Subsequent studies found it increases survival motor neuron protein production. It functions as a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, a non-narcotic analgesic, and an inhibitor of prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthase (EC 1.14.99.1). It is a member of isoindoles and gamma-lactams, and is functionally related to propionic acid.
