Doxifluridine is a pyrimidine 5'-deoxyribonucleoside where the 5' hydroxy group is replaced by a hydrogen, making it 5-fluorouridine. It serves as an oral prodrug of 5-fluorouracil, designed to bypass rapid gut wall degradation by dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase. Converted to 5-fluorouracil by pyrimidine nucleoside phosphorylase, it functions as an antimetabolite, antineoplastic agent, and prodrug. It is also an organofluorine compound and a pyrimidine 5'-deoxyribonucleoside.
