Doxapram is an N-ethylpyrrolidin-2-one with two phenyl groups substituting the hydrogens at the 3 position (adjacent to the carbonyl group) and a 2-(morpholin-4-yl)ethyl group substituting one hydrogen at the 4 position. It is a central and respiratory stimulant with a brief duration of action, used as a temporary treatment for acute respiratory failure, particularly in cases of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and postoperative respiratory depression. It has also been used for postoperative shivering. It functions as a central nervous system stimulant and belongs to the classes of morpholines and pyrrolidin-2-ones.
