Homovanillic acid is a monocarboxylic acid and the 3-O-methyl ether of (3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)acetic acid. It is a catecholamine metabolite found in humans and mice. It belongs to the guaiacol group and is the conjugate acid of homovanillate. It is functionally related to (3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)acetic acid.
