Amifostine is an organic thiophosphate, the S-phospho derivative of 2-[(3-aminopropyl)amino]ethanethiol. It serves as a prodrug for the free thiol WR-1065, used as a cytoprotectant in cancer chemotherapy and radiotherapy. It functions as a prodrug, radiation protective agent, and antioxidant. It is a diamine and an organic thiophosphate, and is functionally related to cysteamine.
