Anacardic acid is a hydroxybenzoic acid with a pentadecyl group at position 6, derived from salicylic acid. It is a major component of cashew nut shell liquid and exhibits diverse bioactivities. It functions as an inhibitor of histone acetyltransferase (EC 2.3.1.48), an apoptosis inducer, a neuroprotective agent, an inhibitor of SARS coronavirus main proteinase (EC 3.4.22.69), an anticoronaviral, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory agent, as well as a plant metabolite. It is also a hydroxy monocarboxylic acid and functionally related to salicylic acid.
