Ertapenem is a carbapenem carboxylic acid and pyrrolidine carboxamide, derived from meropenem by replacing one methyl group attached to the amide nitrogen with hydrogen and the other with a 3-carboxyphenyl group. Its sodium salt is used to treat moderate to severe susceptible infections, including intra-abdominal and acute gynaecological infections, pneumonia, and skin and urinary tract infections. It functions as an antibacterial drug and is the conjugate acid of ertapenem(1-).
