Escitalopram is 1-[3-(dimethylamino)propyl]-1-(4-fluorophenyl)-1,3-dihydro-2-benzofuran-5-carbonitrile with S-configuration at the chiral center. It is the active enantiomer of citalopram, functioning as an antidepressant and inhibitor of EC 3.4.21.26 (prolyl oligopeptidase). It is the conjugate base of escitalopram(1+) and an enantiomer of (R)-citalopram.
