Cidofovir anhydrous is a nucleoside analogue with a cytosine base substituted at the 1-position by a 3-hydroxy-2-(phosphonomethoxy)propyl group (S configuration). It is an injectable antiviral used to treat cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis in AIDS patients. It functions as an antiviral drug, antineoplastic agent, anti-HIV agent, and photosensitizing agent. Chemically, it is a pyrimidone and a member of phosphonic acids, acting as the conjugate acid of cidofovir(2-) and cidofovir(1-).
