Sumatriptan is a sulfonamide containing N,N-dimethyltryptamine with an additional (N-methylsulfamoyl)methyl group at position 5. It is a selective agonist for a vascular 5-HT1 receptor subtype, likely a member of the 5-HT1D family. Used as its succinate salt for the acute treatment of migraine with or without aura in adults. It functions as a serotonergic agonist and vasoconstrictor, and is a member of the tryptamines. It is functionally related to N,N-dimethyltryptamine and acts as the conjugate base of sumatriptan(1+).
